Your contact form says thanks, but no email arrives

2026-09-21

A customer fills in a form, sees “Thanks, we will be in touch”, and closes the page. They believe they wrote to you. You wait for a call that never comes. Both sides may have done the right thing. The message simply stopped somewhere between the page and the inbox.

It is easy to miss because the form looks fine in a design review. The fields accept text. The button works. The thank-you screen appears. That only checks the first part of the route.

A thank-you screen is not evidence

A form must collect the details, send them through a server or service, and deliver them to an inbox someone watches. Any point can fail: a changed password, a full mailbox, spam filtering, a disabled connection, or an address belonging to someone who left.

So do not ask a developer only whether the form works. Check whether your message arrives where a person will see it, and whether you could reply now.

A real test is not a demo

A test from the office can hide a problem. You may be signed in, using a different browser, or looking at the inbox already open beside you. A buyer is not.

Use a phone on mobile data. Enter new text you did not copy and an address you can answer. Then check the main inbox, spam, delivery records and the person who is meant to receive inquiries.

Give the last step an owner

Even a delivered message does not create work by itself. If it goes to a shared inbox, someone must be responsible after hours, during holidays and when the usual person is ill. That is not an automation issue. It is an agreement.

Send one test message through your own site today and note the time. If you cannot say who received it and who will answer within a time you consider reasonable, the first fix is not a new form. It is one name beside the inbox.
