A fast score and a slow phone: what to check

An owner sends a screenshot: the score is green. We open the same page on a phone. The first image is still arriving, the button moves under a thumb, and the form drops down the page. Both things can be true. One number cannot describe a whole visit.
Google’s Core Web Vitals measure three parts of real-world experience: when the largest visible element appears, how quickly a page responds to an action, and whether the layout shifts. They are useful measures. They are not a diploma, and they do not guarantee a ranking or an inquiry.
A score has a data source
PageSpeed Insights can show a lab result from one test and, where there is enough data, data from real visits. Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report groups real-user data for similar pages. A small site may not have enough data for a single URL.
So look at what you are measuring. A lab test helps find a problem now. Field data tells you whether it repeats. Neither replaces a person trying to understand an offer or press a button.
The first big thing is often an image
LCP measures when the largest element in the first viewport appears. Google recommends aiming for it to happen within 2.5 seconds of loading. That element is often a large image, video or prominent text block.
The answer is not to shrink everything blindly. First find which element is largest on a real phone. An image can be served at an appropriate size and format while still remaining clear enough for a person choosing a service or product.
A test without score theatre
Open your most important page on a phone using mobile data. Do not repeat the test five times in a row: the browser may use yesterday’s copy. On the first visit, see when the important text appears, then press one real button and fill one field.
Write down more than seconds. What got in the way: an image, a moving button, a popup, or an unclear first sentence? Fix what blocks the most important business action first. The green score can wait. The person who left cannot.
